2007 Class D State Champions

Welcome to the home of the 2007 Class D NY State Champions!

11-18-07: Haldane Claims State Championship!

For the third year in a row, Haldane squared off against rival Randolph in the penultimate game in a battle for the Class D state championship. After a rocky start in which an uncharacteristically large number of unforced errors, from Haldane, gave Randolph the first game, Haldane took control and battled out a 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 victory to secure the coveted state championship. It was a well deserved ending for a team that hadn't lost so much as a single set dating back to the finals of the HenHud Tournament, on September 15th, when they lost to AA State Champion, Massapequa, in the finals. The championship capped a season that saw them beat two time Class A state champion Hendrick Hudson, and Class B finalist Red Hook during tournament competition.

Katie McConville and Megan Lyons were named to the State Championships All Tournament Team. McConville also brought home the Sportsmanship Award.

11-17-07: State Semi-Finals - Haldane, Randolph, Chateaugay, Shelter Island

Playing like the team on a mission that they are, Haldane rolled through pool play at the State semi-finals in convincing fashion, outscoring their opponents in the 6 games by a whopping 150-57! In the first match, Haldane came out on fire as they steam rolled Chateaugay, 25-8, 25-7. Megan Lyons reached a huge plateau as she recorded her 500th high school kill in the first game at states. She, and Katie McConville, each had 7 kills to lead the way. Danielle Etta served 18 points in a row, including 4 aces.

In match 2, Haldane easily took out Shelter Island, 25-10, 25-6. The victory assured Haldane of a place in the finals, but they still had one more match against the team that had taken the state title from them the last 2 years.

In the rematch of last year's finals and the preview of Sundays 2007 finals, Haldane started with a case of the jitters, as Randolph jumped out to a 5-1 lead. That was when Lyons let lose with a thundering kill and it was all Haldane from that point forward. Haldane went on to win in convincing fashion, 25-14, 25-12, and sent a powerful message that this was their year! Haldane and Randolph will square off in the Class D Finals at 2pm on Sunday, 11/17.

11-10-07: Regionals: Haldane vs Candor

In a match up of state semi-finalists from last year, Haldane prevailed in a 3 set sweep of Candor to advance to the State Semi-Finals.

11-03-07: Section 1 Finals: Haldane vs Keio

Haldane advanced to the regional round with a 25-8,25-17,25-7 win over Keio Academy in the Section 1, Class D Finals. For Haldane, this was their 5th consecutive Section 1 title. Katie McConville led all hitters with 11 kills as she hit over .500 on the match for the 6th time this season! When McConville wasn't seeing the ball on the right, it was probably Megan Lyons bombing away from the left side as she tallied 10 kills on the evening and added another 6 points in aces from the service line. Come cheer on your Blue Devils on Saturday, 11/10, at 5:30p, at John Jay Cross River as they face off against the Section 4 champions, Candor, for the right to advance to states.

After a slow start for the team, co-Captain Katie McConville got things under control as she served 18 consecutive points, including 12 aces off of her fearsome jump serve. Jennifer Lombardo was unstoppable hitting from the outside, as she had 13 kills out of 16 total attempts. Megan Lyons was also hot as she tallied 11 kills. 10-23-07: Varsity and JV come up big against Ardsley

Excitement filled the air as the Haldane JV and Varsity took the floor against Ardsley for Senior Night. JV played a great ball control game as they took 2 well played sets from Ardsley to set the stage for the seniors big night! The gym was packed and the team was doubly excited; not only was this the long anticipated home finale for the Seniors, but Ardsley was a good program that will go into Sectionals as one of the top seeds in Class B. The match lived up to expectations as there were a lot of great rallies that featured thundering blasts and awesome defense. In the end, Haldane had too many "goto" weapons, as Setter Rachel Flaherty once again playing her best in a big match, found the hitters time after time with great fast-tempo sets. Megan Lyons led all hitters, with 14 kills and led the team in aces with 4. Lyons and libero Dani Etta were outstanding in serve receive, as between them they had 100% good passes and over 86% perfect passes.

10-22-07: Varsity wins as JV gets revenge against North Salem

Avenging their only loss of the season, the JV team beat North Salem in a close 3 set match. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Haldane took to the court against a very strong Fox Lane JV team. Haldane struggled early and, despite a late serving run by captain Megan Barcavage, Fox Lane took the match 25-18. Freshman Eva Ally had a standout day, leading the team with seven kills and consistently stellar passing.

10-18-07: JV & Varsity sweep series against Dover

After splitting the first two lopsided sets, the JV pulled out a close and exciting 3rd set to beat John Jay CR's JV team 8-25, 25-13, 25-23. The varsity proved, once again, that it's not the size of the girl in the fight, but the size of the fight in the girl that counts, as they took the lead early in each game and never let up in route to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 sweep.

10-13-07: Varsity takes out 2 time defending state champ, Frontier Regional, of MA

Setters Rachel Flaherty and Cassie Barcavage did a nice job of distributing the ball as all 8 front row attackers had at least one kill. Megan Lyons led all hitters as she set a season high with 15 kills in the 3 games. Katie McConville added 11 kills from the right side. Flaherty and Lyons were both strong from the service line as they each dished out 6 aces. Danielle Etta added 4 aces. The game ball goes to Holly Whiston as she recorded marks in Aces, Kills, Blocks and Digs in route to an all around fine game from the MB position.

10-05-07: Varsity gets Revenge against Pelham

3 weeks ago, Pelham handed varsity one of their very few set losses in a split during pool play at the HenHud tournament. Varsity came out strong in the first set as Jen Lombardo was on fire, collecting 7 kills out of 8 attempts, in route to a first set romp. During the 2nd and 3rd sets, Pelham stepped up their defense and varsity got a little sloppy, committing 23 serving and hitting errors.
